What Is Mini-Tennis?

Mini Tennis is a great introduction to the sport for young children between 4 and 10 years old. It’s just like the real thing, but with smaller courts, nets and rackets and lower-bouncing balls.

There are three levels of Mini Tennis; Red, Orange and Green, each with there own court size and type of ball. This tailored approach, based on age and physical maturity enables players to develop vital skills and techniques at an early age.

Many sports have a mini version including, football, rugby and cricket which are helping to develop young talent in appropriate learning environments.

The low compression balls used in Mini Tennis are now being used by clubs and coaches accross the UK to introduce adult beginners to the sport. The slower and lower bouncing balls make it far easier to learn the game.

Players interested in trying mini tennis should get in touch or come along to find out more.

Once a player starts playing in tournaments their results go towards increasing their Mini Tennis Rating which is used to determine a players level and assists with entry into higher levels of competition as a player improves.

In Orange a match is usually the best of three tiebreaks to 7 points or one short set to 4 games.

In Green a match will be a minimum of one short set to 4 games following the rules of standard tennis.

Timed Tennis also takes place at mini tennis.

Basic rules for playing tiebreaks

  • After deciding who serves first, players should serve diagonally, under-arm or overarm.
  • The first server serves for one point, starting from the right hand side of the court. Thereafter, each player serves for two points, one from the left and one from the right hand side of the court.
  • Players have a first and second serve and the ball should not bounce before it’s hit.
  • Players play out each point following the rules of standard tennis.
